September 11th, 2006 - Five years after the towers. Where were you five years ago when you heard about The World Trade Center?
I was driving in from Phoenix (to Tempe) and as I passed the freeway signs for Sky Harbor Inernational Airport - the signs read AIRPORT CLOSED. The first thing I thought of was that there was a plane crash here in Phoenix. I couldn't see any smoke or hear any sirens or anything that told me there was something terribly wrong. I flipped on the radio in the car and Howard Stern was delivering the news. I believe the first tower had gone down.
What a shock. I couldn't comprehend just how huge this was - but I knew it was big. Sounds silly to say but nevertheless true.
People banded together and helped eachother. People had new found respect for EMS, Police & Fire Departments. Search, Rescue and Recovery Operations went on around the clock for months.
Growing up in NJ the towers were a part of my daily day. From the town I lived in they could be seen ini the distance. They were gone and never to be seen again.
People who I went to school with died that day. A friend from school's future wife (also a high school friend of mine) was walking out of Tower 1 as it got hit.
I flew home for my Sister's wedding on the first available flight out when the airports re-opened. It was scary, no doubt. I didn't go into Manhatten on that trip but I took photos of other parts of the city.
I know I'll Never Forget The Towers.
